Reminders:

  • Bring a spiral bound notebook/notebook paper and pens/pencils to class each day.

Directions:

  1. Take out your notebook/paper and something to write with.
  2. Copy today's learning objectives and HW.

Learning Objectives (copy in your planner)

Students will:
  • Learn new vocabulary.
  • Identify elements of science fiction independently.
  • Create a dialectical journal based on Night. (Respond, Analyze, Evaluate)
  • Identify Elements of Science Fiction in Minority Report.
  • Follow a prompt and outline to create a persuasive essay.

Homework:

  • Create Vocabulary Circles for Ch. 27 (Ch 21-28 Test Friday!) and your new Academic Vocabulary words.

7:30-8:10: Vocabulary

8:10-8:30: Sci-Fi Independent Reading
  • Reading quietly .
  • As you read, keep track of the elements of science fiction in the novel in Cornell Note style

8:30-8:45: Academic Vocabulary (Practice Quizzes Later Today--today's Academic Vocab Quiz will not go in your gradebook)
  • Work alone or in pairs to match the 10 words to their definitions.
  • Create vocabulary circles for the 10 words in your own notebook (these words are generated at random, so if repeats come up, you don't need to make a 2nd Vocabulary Circle--however, by the end of the 2nd week you need to have all 55 Vocabulary Circles).
  • Remember to keep ALL of your vocabulary circles--all tests/quizzes are cumulative.
  • Randomly chosen 10 of the 55 Academic Vocabulary words

8:45-9:55: Night Reading & Section Review
  • Finish responding to questions for Chapter 4 / adding to Dialectical Jounral
  • Read Chapter 5
  • Give 10 minutes to add to dialectical journal.
  • Remaining time to be used for Study Questions


  • Reading: Follow along with sound recording. Maintain your dialectical journal. You need 20 entries and we will be reading this book over 9 days (so you need to have two entries each day)

10:10-10:25: Journal Entry 7

10:25:-11:00: Film as Literature
  • Sci-Fi Film: Minority Report
  • Students create Cornell Notes using the study questions. We can begin the film after everyone is ready.

11:00-11:25: Review Persuasive Prompt
  • What is your assignment?
  • What are the pros/cons for technological advancement?

11:25-12:25: Computer Lab
  • Plan and write your persuasive essay:
  • Complete Step 2: Drafting Your Introduction
  • Begin Step 3: Anticipate Objections (complete if you have extra time)
  • As you write your essay, follow the model of the Outlined Overview
  • BE SURE TO SAVE ALL OF YOUR WORK IN YOUR STUDENT FOLDER AND/OR E-MAIL IT TO YOURSELF!
