Reminders:

  • Bring a spiral bound notebook/notebook paper and pens/pencils to class each day.

Directions:

  1. Take out your notebook/paper and something to write with.

Learning Objectives (copy in your planner)

Students will:
  • Learn new vocabulary.
  • Identify elements of science fiction independently.
  • Create a dialectical journal based on Night.
  • Identify Elements of Science Fiction in Minority Report.
  • Demonstrate understanding of vocabulary.
  • Follow a prompt and outline to create a persuasive essay.

Homework:

  • Create Vocabulary Circles for Ch. 29 (Ch 29-30) and your new Academic Vocabulary words.

7:30-8:00: Vocabulary

8:00-8:20: Sci-Fi Independent Reading
  • Reading quietly .
  • As you read, keep track of the elements of science fiction in the novel in Cornell Note style

8:20-8:25: Grade Update
  • Show grades.

8:25-8:40: Academic Vocabulary
  • Work alone or in pairs to match the 10 words to their definitions.
  • Create vocabulary circles for the 10 words in your own notebook (these words are generated at random, so if repeats come up, you don't need to make a 2nd Vocabulary Circle--however, by the end of the 2nd week you need to have all 55 Vocabulary Circles).
  • Remember to keep ALL of your vocabulary circles--all tests/quizzes are cumulative.
  • Randomly chosen 10 of the 55 Academic Vocabulary words

8:35-9:55: Night Reading & Section Review
  • Read Chapter 7
  • Give time to respond to review questions and add to dialectical journal.


  • Reading: Follow along with sound recording. Maintain your dialectical journal. You need 20 entries and we will be reading this book over 9 days (so you need to have two entries each day)

10:10-10:25: Journal Entry 9

10:25:-11:05: Film as Literature
  • Sci-Fi Film: Minority Report
  • Review the questions.
  • Map out the pros and cons the movie gave us concerning technology.
  • What was the film's thesis statement?

11:05-11:20: Concluding Thoughts & Rubric
  • Read through "Getting Started with Concluding Thoughts"
  • Pass out rubrics.

11:25-12:25: Computer Lab
  • Plan and write your persuasive essay:
  • Finish drafting your essay.
  • As you write your essay, follow the model of the Outlined Overview
  • PRINT A COPY OF YOUR ESSAY AND BRING IT TO CLASS TOMORROW! YOU NEED TO HAVE A COPY OF YOUR PAPER TOMORROW FOR PEER REVIEW ACTIVITIES.
  • BE SURE TO SAVE ALL OF YOUR WORK IN YOUR STUDENT FOLDER AND/OR E-MAIL IT TO YOURSELF!


  • You will be delivering a short presentation on your essay.
  • You will be creating a PowerPoint that highlights your main points (with images to complement your writing).
  • Your PowerPoint will be 6 to 11 slides long:
  • Title Slide: 1
  • Introduction/Thesis: 1-2
  • Main Points: 3-4
  • Addressing Counterarguments: 2-3 (unless you already did this with your Main Points slides)
