Reminders:

  • Bring a spiral bound notebook/notebook paper and pens/pencils to class each day.

  1. Take out your notebook/paper and something to write with.
  2. Copy today's learning objectives and HW.

Learning Objectives (copy in your planner)

  • Learn new vocabulary.
  • Identify elements of science fiction independently.
  • Conduct internet research.
  • Create extrapolations based on research.
  • Create a professional PowerPoint presentation.

Homework:

  • Create Vocabulary Circles for Ch. 16 & 17 and your new Academic Vocabulary words.

  • As you read, keep track of the elements of science fiction in the novel in Cornell Note style

8:50-9:15: Academic Vocabulary
  • Work alone or in pairs to match the 10 words to their definitions.
  • Create vocabulary circles for the 10 words in your own notebook (these words are generated at random, so if repeats come up, you don't need to make a 2nd Vocabulary Circle--however, by the end of the 2nd week you need to have all 55 Vocabulary Circles).
  • Remember to keep ALL of your vocabulary circles--all tests/quizzes are cumulative.
  • Randomly chosen 10 of the 55 Academic Vocabulary words


9:15-9:55: Vocabulary
  • Chapter 16 Vocabulary (Review)
  • Chapter 17 Vocabulary (new vocabulary circles, then complete the handout).
  • Each day will begin with a vocabulary quiz. Tomorrow's quiz will have Chapter 16 & 17.
  • Copy the vocabulary words and definitions into your notebooks. Leave a section of your notebook for your vocabulary list. Vocabulary tests/quizzes will be cumulative (after week one, your test will be on Chapters 14-21, after week two your test will be on chapters 14-27 or 28)

  • Only use the computers for what you have been given permission to do. Any other use = referral/likely removal from class.
  • Your job will be to create and present a PowerPoint presentation detailing how humans will live on a specific planet other than Earth. You will detail how humans will deal with the planet's atmosphere, climate, gravitational force, and length of day. You will explain how humans will survive and thrive on the planet. What will life be like on this planet?
  • Refer to your journal entry 1.
  • Before thinking about your PowerPoint, you first need the content of your presentation.

  • Be sure whatever information you find comes from a reputable source.
  • Your slides need to both inform us about the planet in order to be convincing.
  • If you want to start building your PowerPoint today, be sure to save your work!

  • PRESENTATIONS WILL BE ON THURSDAY (short--3-5 minutes each)


  • Each topic needs at least one slide. You need 7 to 12 slides. Your slides will be judged based on: Visual Appeal, Writing Style, Creativity, Convincing, Elements of Speech (i.e., the presenter's speaking skills).
